A Note from Neil...

Fate? Luck? Who knows what it was that lead to the meeting of the two musical duos that appear on this recording? Who cares, really? It happened. That's all that matters!

Scott Oram and Ryan Davis worked on music together for a long time, but never settled on a name for themselves. Instead, they chose a different name depending on the style of music they happened to come up with at that moment. They are both talented multi-instrument players and writers. Corey Miller and I have worked together musically since February 1995. We worked together in the band Cinema and continue to work together developing YL and other side projects.

Scott, Ryan and I held a job together in 1996. We were aware of each other and our musical interests. We talked several times about getting together to see what we could do. After a couple of failed attempts, we convened on 11.2.96 with Corey.

We met at Scott's house and spent about three hours in the basement coming up with grooves. When we found one we liked, we started recording and kept going until it fell apart or there was nowhere else to go. All of the pieces came directly from the top of our heads and were completely spontaneous.

Out of the four pieces that we recorded, only two and a half really worked well. "Motion I" and "Motion II" are really interesting and have a song-like quality to them. They appear on this album in their entirety and fully mixed. "Standing Up Inside a Hole" is basically noise. It also appears here in its entirety, but is not fully mixed (in other words, Corey and I just pulled up levels and let the tape run). "Passion" started pleasantly, but progressively became worse toward the end. A fully mixed edited version appears here.
